What a domain is and why ownership matters

The domain is your website’s address, like yourbusiness.com. It is what you print on your cards, your van, your Google listing and your business email. Over the years it becomes one of your business’s most valuable digital assets, because everything points to it.

A domain is not bought forever: it is registered for periods, usually one year, and renewed. What matters is who is listed as the registrant. If the registrant is the agency that built your site and not you, in practice you depend on them for any change, and getting it back can be a long process.

That is why our rule is simple: the domain is registered in your name, always, from day one.

The first year

With the website build payment, Webmake registers and pays for the first year of your domain (.es or .com), together with the SSL certificate so the site loads over HTTPS.

The SSL certificate is what shows the padlock in the browser. Without it, browsers flag the site as "not secure", forms feel untrustworthy and Google favours the competition.

Renewal from the second year

Annual renewal is included in the fee with Webmake Security or Webmake Growth & SEO. Without maintenance or with Webmake Essential, you pay the registrar directly, with no added markup.

DNS and business email

We take care of the domain’s technical setup (DNS) so your site and business email work, and your messages land in inboxes instead of spam.

DNS works like your domain’s address book: it tells the internet where your site lives and which server receives your email. An incomplete setup is the most common reason a business’s emails end up in their customers’ spam folder.

If you already have a domain

If you already have a domain, you do not need to change it or lose the email you use today. The usual approach is to keep it where it is and point its DNS to the new site, or transfer it if you prefer everything in one place.

Before touching anything we check whose name it is registered under. If it turns out to be in a previous provider’s name, we explain how to request the change of registrant so it becomes yours.

If you stop maintenance

The domain stays yours whatever happens. If you cancel maintenance or change provider, we hand over what you need to manage it yourself or with whoever you choose, and the annual renewal is then paid directly to the registrar.
